Gye

Yin Water · rain, dew, mist

Gye (癸) is Yin Water, the rain: gentle, intuitive and perceptive, nourishing everything quietly, with moods that mist over and a tendency to be drained.

Nature

Gye is the last of the ten stems and the softest water: rain, dew, the mist on a hillside. Yin Water people are sensitive, imaginative and receptive. They feel what a room feels, they nourish without being noticed, and they see connections others miss. The tradition links Gye to intuition and to the hidden: rain falls everywhere and belongs nowhere. It also notes how easily Gye evaporates in heat.

Strengths

  • Intuition: reads situations and people with unusual accuracy.
  • Gentleness: a calming, healing presence.
  • Imagination: rich inner life; creative and spiritual leanings.
  • Persistence: soft water, given time, wears through stone.

What to watch

  • Moodiness: weather changes fast.
  • Secretiveness: keeps its own counsel, sometimes too well.
  • Depletion: gives until empty; struggles to refill.
  • Passivity: waits for conditions rather than making them.

In relationships

Tender, empathetic and deeply loyal, Gye needs a partner who is steady and warm. Coldness or chaos scatters the mist. Metal in the chart (Gyeong, the spring the water comes from) is the traditional source of strength, and Mu (Yang Earth) forms a combination with Gye, the rain on the mountain.

At work

Writing, psychology, counselling, analysis, healthcare, spiritual or artistic work: anything that rewards perception and quiet persistence. Gye is drained by aggressive, loud environments and thrives with a clear source of support.

How the other elements read for Gye

Every other character in a Gye chart is named by its relationship to Water. This is the key for reading the ten gods on your chart.

  • Water characters are Friends and Rob Wealth: peers, competition, self-reliance.
  • Metal produces Water, so it is Resource: support, learning, protection.
  • Wood is produced by Water, so it is Output (Eating God, Hurting Officer): talent, expression, children.
  • Fire is controlled by Water, so it is Wealth: money, ambition, and for a male chart the partner.
  • Earth controls Water, so it is Officer and Seven Killings: authority, pressure, and for a female chart the partner.
The useful element for your own chart depends on the season you were born in and the other seven characters. The SajuPaste text names it explicitly; general rules for Gye are a starting point, not the answer.

Questions people ask

What balances a Gye chart?
Metal as the source of the water, and gentle Fire for warmth. Heavy Earth blocks the rain and heavy Fire evaporates it, so Gye charts with either are read as needing support. Your SajuPaste text gives the useful element for your chart.
Is Gye a weak Day Master?
Yin Water is soft, not weak. Born in winter with Metal nearby, Gye is strong and steady. The point of Gye is not force but reach: rain touches everything.
