Mu

Yang Earth · a mountain

Mu (戊) is Yang Earth, the mountain: steady, protective and trustworthy, slow to move and slower to change its mind.

Nature

Mu is the mountain, and everything the image implies: mass, permanence, shelter. Yang Earth people are the ones others lean on. They are dependable, unhurried and hard to shake. They keep secrets, keep promises and keep going. They also keep their opinions, long after the evidence has moved. A mountain is not persuaded; it is eroded, slowly.

Strengths

  • Reliability: the person who is still there when the excitement has left.
  • Composure: crises do not move Mu much.
  • Protectiveness: provides for family and team without fuss.
  • Fairness: a big-picture sense of what is right, unswayed by fashion.

What to watch

  • Stubbornness: the flip side of steadiness. Mu rarely changes course.
  • Slowness: opportunities that require quick moves pass by.
  • Hoarding: of things, money, feelings and grievances.
  • Emotional flatness: partners may want more visible response.

In relationships

Constant, faithful and undemonstrative. Mu shows love by providing and protecting rather than by saying so. Partners who need words can feel starved; partners who value security feel at home. Water (the river through the valley) is the traditional complement, and Gye (Yin Water) forms a combination with Mu.

At work

Real estate, finance, administration, engineering, construction, logistics: anything built to last. Mu is a natural custodian of institutions and money, and less suited to work that rewards speed and improvisation.

How the other elements read for Mu

Every other character in a Mu chart is named by its relationship to Earth. This is the key for reading the ten gods on your chart.

  • Earth characters are Friends and Rob Wealth: peers, competition, self-reliance.
  • Fire produces Earth, so it is Resource: support, learning, protection.
  • Metal is produced by Earth, so it is Output (Eating God, Hurting Officer): talent, expression, children.
  • Water is controlled by Earth, so it is Wealth: money, ambition, and for a male chart the partner.
  • Wood controls Earth, so it is Officer and Seven Killings: authority, pressure, and for a female chart the partner.
The useful element for your own chart depends on the season you were born in and the other seven characters. The SajuPaste text names it explicitly; general rules for Mu are a starting point, not the answer.

Questions people ask

What balances a Mu chart?
Wood to shape the mountain and Water to bring it life; Fire warms a cold, wet Earth. Too much Earth makes a chart that barely moves. The useful element in your SajuPaste text is specific to your chart.
Why does my Mu chart feel heavy?
Earth Day Masters born in the Earth months (the Dragon, Goat, Dog and Ox months) often read as heavy because Earth dominates. A reader looks for Wood or Water elsewhere in the chart to move it.
