Kui Gang (Goegangsal)

魁罡괴강

Kui Gang (魁罡, Goegangsal) marks four pillars of concentrated power in Saju: bold, capable, uncompromising. Which pillars they are and how they are read.

What it means

魁 and 罡 are names of stars in the Northern Dipper, which old astronomy linked to the branches 戌 and 辰. A Kui Gang pillar carries their authority: commanding, intelligent, strict and extreme. Tradition says a Kui Gang life goes to one end or the other, great success or great difficulty, and seldom stays in the middle.

How to find it

Kui Gang is a property of four of the sixty pillars. Classically it is judged on the Day pillar; SajuPaste marks it on whichever pillar it appears.

Some schools add 戊戌 or 戊辰. SajuPaste uses the four that every school accepts.

Reading it

  • Leadership and nerve: decisions are made quickly and held to.
  • High standards, for oneself first and then for everyone else.
  • A clear, analytical mind that dislikes vagueness.
  • Old texts called it difficult in a woman’s chart, meaning too strong for the role expected of her. Modern readers read it the same for everyone: a person who leads.

What to watch

Rigidity and severity. A Kui Gang chart is advised to leave others room to be wrong. Tradition also says the star dislikes being clashed: a year that clashes the Kui Gang branch is read as a time of upheaval.

Questions people ask

Is Goegangsal good or bad?
Both readings exist because the star is about extremes. It gives ability and authority. What a person does with them, and how they treat others on the way, decides which side shows.
Does Kui Gang only count on the day pillar?
Classical texts speak of the Day pillar, where it describes the person. Many Korean chart tables mark it on any pillar, as SajuPaste does, and read it through what that pillar stands for.
