Mu-Jin day pillar

Yang Earth over the Dragon무진일주 · BaZi: Wu Chen

A mountain over a hidden reservoir. A large, self-contained nature: reliable, strong-willed and hard to move.

The picture

Mu-Jin is Earth on Earth, a mountain standing on its own ground. Inside the Dragon there is water and a little wood, so the mountain is not barren: it holds resources that do not show from outside. This pillar has presence. It is steady, capable of carrying a great deal, and slow to change its mind. When pushed too far it does not bend; it erupts.

What the pillar is made of

PartIn Mu-Jin
Day Master戊 Mu, Yang Earth
Day branch辰 Jin, the Dragon

Life stageYouth 冠帶
Void branches戌 Sul (Dog), 亥 Hae (Pig)

The Day Master sits on its own element, in the same polarity. The seat is a root: a strong sense of self and a home life run on its own terms. The partner is read as an equal, sometimes as a rival.

These are the facts every Mu-Jin chart shares, whatever the other three pillars hold. They are taken from the same engine that calculates your chart.

Strengths

  • Reliability that others build on.
  • Stamina for large, long undertakings.
  • Calm under ordinary pressure.

What to watch

  • Stubbornness presented as principle.
  • Slowness to adapt.
  • A rare but heavy temper.

In relationships

Mu-Jin wants a partner who is an equal and keeps a clear sense of its own territory. Loyalty is strong; flexibility has to be learned.

At work

Construction, land, management and large organisations. It does best when given a domain of its own to run.

A day pillar is one of four. Two people born on a Mu-Jin day in different months and hours have different charts: the season decides how strong the Day Master is, and the other pillars add their own ten gods and interactions. Read this page as the starting point, then look at the whole chart.

Questions people ask

What does the Mu-Jin day pillar mean?
Mu-Jin (戊辰) is Yang Earth over the Dragon: a large, self-contained nature: reliable, strong-willed and hard to move.
How do I know if Mu-Jin is my day pillar?
The day pillar comes from a sixty-day cycle and from true solar time at your birthplace, so it cannot be worked out from your birth year or zodiac animal. Calculate your chart: if the Day column shows 戊辰, this is your pillar.
What is 戊辰 called in Chinese BaZi?
Wu Chen. It is the same pillar. Korean Saju reads the characters as Mu-Jin and calls it Mujin ilju (무진일주); BaZi sources write Wu Chen in pinyin.
Which life stage and void branches go with Mu-Jin?
On its own seat the Day Master is at the Youth stage (冠帶). Coming of age, putting on the cap and sash: ambition, dressing up, entering society. The void branches for this pillar are 戌 Sul (Dog) and 亥 Hae (Pig). The strength of the whole chart depends mostly on the birth month, not on this stage alone.
