What it means
The Officer is the element that controls the Day Master. When the polarity is opposite, yin meets yang and the control is balanced: for Gap (Yang Wood) it is 辛 (Yin Metal). This is legitimate authority: law, rules, the organisation, the job title, reputation, conscience. A person with a clean Direct Officer is read as principled, reliable and respected.
Tradition reads the Direct Officer as the husband in a female chart, and the Officer characters as children in a male chart.
Which stem is your Direct Officer
A ten god is a relationship, so it depends on your Day Master. Find your Day Master on the left; the stem on the right is your Direct Officer. A branch counts as Direct Officer when its main hidden stem is that stem.
| Day Master | Its Direct Officer |
|---|---|
| 甲 Gap (Yang Wood) | 辛 Sin (Yin Metal) |
| 乙 Eul (Yin Wood) | 庚 Gyeong (Yang Metal) |
| 丙 Byeong (Yang Fire) | 癸 Gye (Yin Water) |
| 丁 Jeong (Yin Fire) | 壬 Im (Yang Water) |
| 戊 Mu (Yang Earth) | 乙 Eul (Yin Wood) |
| 己 Gi (Yin Earth) | 甲 Gap (Yang Wood) |
| 庚 Gyeong (Yang Metal) | 丁 Jeong (Yin Fire) |
| 辛 Sin (Yin Metal) | 丙 Byeong (Yang Fire) |
| 壬 Im (Yang Water) | 己 Gi (Yin Earth) |
| 癸 Gye (Yin Water) | 戊 Mu (Yang Earth) |
How it works in a chart
- Wealth produces Officer: resources support position.
- Officer produces Resource, and Resource supports the Day Master (官印相生). Pressure from above arrives as backing: the textbook career pattern.
- Hurting Officer controls it. The two together are read as a clash with authority.
- Direct Officer mixed with Seven Killings (官殺混雜) is read as divided loyalties or unclear lines of authority.
Where it shines
Public service, law, management, education, large organisations. Anywhere that advancement follows a recognised path and a good name matters.
What to watch
- Too much concern for how things look.
- Rigidity: difficulty bending a rule even when the rule is wrong.
- On a weak Day Master, heavy Officer is read as a life weighed down by duty.
