What it means
食神 is the “god of food”. It is what the Day Master naturally gives out, in the same polarity: for Gap (Yang Wood), 丙 (Yang Fire). Output of the same polarity flows without friction, so the Eating God is talent that comes easily: cooking, making, teaching, speaking, anything produced at an unhurried pace and enjoyed along the way. It is also read as appetite, good humour, generosity and a long, comfortable life. In a female chart tradition reads the Output characters as children.
Which stem is your Eating God
A ten god is a relationship, so it depends on your Day Master. Find your Day Master on the left; the stem on the right is your Eating God. A branch counts as Eating God when its main hidden stem is that stem.
| Day Master | Its Eating God |
|---|---|
| 甲 Gap (Yang Wood) | 丙 Byeong (Yang Fire) |
| 乙 Eul (Yin Wood) | 丁 Jeong (Yin Fire) |
| 丙 Byeong (Yang Fire) | 戊 Mu (Yang Earth) |
| 丁 Jeong (Yin Fire) | 己 Gi (Yin Earth) |
| 戊 Mu (Yang Earth) | 庚 Gyeong (Yang Metal) |
| 己 Gi (Yin Earth) | 辛 Sin (Yin Metal) |
| 庚 Gyeong (Yang Metal) | 壬 Im (Yang Water) |
| 辛 Sin (Yin Metal) | 癸 Gye (Yin Water) |
| 壬 Im (Yang Water) | 甲 Gap (Yang Wood) |
| 癸 Gye (Yin Water) | 乙 Eul (Yin Wood) |
How it works in a chart
Two classic relationships make the Eating God valuable. It produces Wealth, so skill turns into income (食神生財). And it controls Seven Killings, so the chart’s source of pressure is kept in check by competence rather than by force (食神制殺).
Its enemy is the Indirect Resource, which controls it. A strong Indirect Resource next to the Eating God is the pattern called “the owl steals the food” (倒食, dosik): overthinking that blocks the easy flow.
When it works well
- Work that feels like play: you produce steadily without forcing it.
- Warmth: people relax around an Eating God chart, and hospitality comes naturally.
- A buffer against stress, especially when Seven Killings is also present.
When there is too much
Several Eating Gods drain a weak Day Master: output without rest. It is read as comfort turning into idleness, indulgence in food and pleasure, or talent scattered across too many things. Some schools say that many Eating Gods together behave like a Hurting Officer.
