Indirect Resource (Pyeonin)

偏印편인

Indirect Resource (偏印, Pyeonin) is the element that produces your Day Master, in the same polarity: intuition, unusual knowledge, specialised skill and solitude.

What it means

Indirect Resource produces the Day Master in the same polarity: for Gap (Yang Wood), 壬 (Yang Water). The support is real but comes at an angle. Where Direct Resource is school and the mother, Indirect Resource is the book found by accident, the unusual teacher, the skill nobody asked you to learn. Tradition reads it as a stepmother or a distant mother.

It is associated with intuition and with fields off the main road: medicine, religion, philosophy, divination, the arts, research and technology.

Which stem is your Indirect Resource

A ten god is a relationship, so it depends on your Day Master. Find your Day Master on the left; the stem on the right is your Indirect Resource. A branch counts as Indirect Resource when its main hidden stem is that stem.

How it works in a chart

  • It controls the Eating God. When it does so strongly it is called the Owl (梟神, Hyosin), and the pattern is “the owl steals the food” (倒食): thinking that gets in the way of ease, appetite and output.
  • Indirect Wealth restrains it, bringing a drifting mind back to practical matters.
  • Like Direct Resource, it absorbs Seven Killings and turns pressure into insight.

When it works well

  • Original thinking and a quick grasp of difficult subjects.
  • Depth in one specialised area.
  • Comfort with being alone, which long study requires.

What to watch

  • Starting many things and finishing few once the interest moves on.
  • Suspicion and second-guessing.
  • Isolation, and irregular habits of eating and sleeping.

Questions people ask

Why is Indirect Resource called the Owl?
In old texts the owl is a bird of ill omen. The name is used when Indirect Resource attacks the Eating God, the chart’s source of ease and nourishment. When it does not, it is simply Indirect Resource.
Is Indirect Resource bad?
No. It is the ten god of specialists, researchers and people with unusual gifts. It needs an outlet and a practical anchor, which Wealth or a well-placed Output character provides.
